The Adventures of Tintin , also known in the United Kingdom as The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is a 2011 3D computer-animated mystery action adventure comedy film based on the comics series of the same name by the late Belgian cartoonist Hergé. Directed by Steven Spielberg in his first animated film feature, produced by Peter Jackson, and written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish, the film is based on three of Hergé's albums:The Crab with the Golden Claws (1941),The Secret of the Unicorn (1943), andRed Rackham's Treasure (1944). The cast includes Jamie Bell as Tintin, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock and Sir Francis Haddock, Daniel Craig as Sakharine, and Nick Frost and Simon Pegg as Thomson and Thompson.

A sequel directed by Jackson was announced in the wake of the film's release, but has since stalled in development hell.

Plot

While shopping at an outdoor market, young reporter Tintin (Jamie Bell), accompanied by his faithful dog, Snowy, buys a model of an old ship called the Unicorn. A shady character named Sakharine (Daniel Craig) and later an American named Barnaby (Joe Starr) try to buy the model from him, but Tintin refuses. The lad discovers that the ship contains a clue about a hidden treasure, but before he can locate it, Tintin is kidnapped and given over to the custody of drunken Capt. Haddock (Andy Serkis).

Why It Collects The Unicorn

  1. Great voice acting from all characters, especially Daniel Craig as Ivan Sakharine and Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock and Sir Francis Haddock being best provided.
  2. It is incredibly faithful to the source material, though there are a few changes.
  3. Great animation that looks almost like a live-action film, but still cartoony enough to be animated.
  4. Very unique action scenes, like a ship being flung over another ship, or sword fighting using construction site cranes.
  5. Very good soundtrack composed none other than John Williams himself, for very first animation movie.
  6. The film is basically like Indiana Jones, but since it's an animated movie, it is able to go all the way with its action and adventure (see point 3).
  7. Very likable and great characters, such as Tintin and Snowy.
  8. Amazing storyline that faithfully adapts the stories of The Crab With Golden Claws and The Secret of Unicorn with some changes to effectively blend them together. This was also improvement over The Smurfs, which shares the film adaptation of a Franco-Belgian comic and the same release year and distributor.
  9. Captain Haddock is a hilarious character that retains the charm of the original incarnation.
  10. Steven Spielberg makes a directional debut for animation film and he has put his all on creating unique shots and editing, who is an avid fan of The Adventures of Tintin comic book series in 1981 after a review compared Raiders of the Lost Ark to Tintin.
  11. Like Monster House, another film from Columbia Pictures, it is one of motion-capture computer-animated movie that didn't get caught in a uncanny valley, rather it did manage to look photo-realistic, right and all-digital motion-capture computer-animated film.
  12. The fact that Hergé, the creator of comic book series and the original design of Tintin were at least appears in this movie for cameo, which is a nice mod of its source material.
  13. Like Lord Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2, Ivan Sakharine is an excellent villain.

The Only Bad Quality

  1. Some violence may not suitable for young viewers despite being PG-rated.

Reception

Critical response

The Adventures of Tintin got positive reviews from critics as well as universal acclaim from audiences and fans alike, who praised the stylized use of motion capture (particularly the faithful look to Hergé's works), visual effects, action scenes, performances and music, to which they compared one of Spielberg's previous works, Raiders of the Lost Ark. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 74% based on 233 reviews, with an average score of 7/10. The website's critical consensus reads: "Drawing deep from the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark playbook, Steven Spielberg has crafted another spirited, thrilling adventure in the form of Tintin.". Metacritic, another review aggregator which assigns a weighted mean rating to reviews from mainstream critics, gives the film a score of 68 out of 100 based on 40 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale. The film has an rating of 7.4/10 on IMDb. It is also one of the best movies of 2011 as well as motion-capture as computer animation.

Box office

The Adventures of Tintin grossed $77,591,831 in North America and $296,402,120 in other territories for a worldwide total of $373,993,951 against its $135 million budget, making it Paramount's highest-grossing animated feature as well as sixth Sony's highest-grossing animated feature.

Awards

The Adventures of Tintin was not only the first all-digital motion-captured computer-animated film (as well as the first non-Pixar animated film) to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, but also the first film from Paramount Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and Amblin Entertainment. Composer John Williams was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score and the film was nominated for six Saturn Awards, including Best Animated Film, Best Director for Spielberg and Best Music for Williams.

Sequel?

In November 2011, Steven Spielberg announced a sequel to the 2011 film The Adventures of Tintin and was planned to be released sometime in the future. As of 2021, there have been little to no info about the film, but Peter Jackson is still involved with the project. The third Tintin film is also announced.
